Brief notes on the town:

This town boasts ancient origins and was the first chief town of Goceano. Illorai is a territory abounding in charm and attractions, where alongside a rich and uncontaminated nature it is possible to perceive the signs of a millenary history, with traces left by men who inhabited this area since the remotest times. Illorai rose in the High Tirso Valley, not far from the Baths, so it boasts mineral springs almost similar to those of Benetutti, and like these used to cure rheumatic pains, sciatica, gout, imperfect and perfect paralyses.
In ancient times, it was an important and populated centre; this is demonstrated by the fact that along the river that laps it, the ruins of 26 water powered mills were still clearly visible up to the last century. Of great interest is also the Augustinian convent, which was one of the most flourishing on the island.

Economic activities:

The local economy is purely agro-pastoral.

The history:

Downstream, in the hamlet of Molia, a large necropolis in the form of domus de janas is evidence of the deep connection which united the pre-Nuragic Sardinians to their dead and to the afterlife. The red ochre of the walls, which makes some of the surroundings characteristic, recalls the colour of blood, symbol of rebirth and regeneration. The Romans also settled here and built a remarkable three span bridge over the River Tirso. Granite rocks and olive trees make the frame in which the bridge is found even more delightful and picturesque. In the mountain area the numerous nuraghi are evidence of the existence of population centres dating from the prehistoric age. To make the visit to the monuments even more interesting is the wonderful surrounding landscape abounding in woods of Holm oak and downy oak that are more than a century old. Downy oak like that of “Sa Melabrina” indicated by “vox populi” as the oldest in Europe, woods like that of “Sa Cariasa”, where the destructive action of man has been minimal if not absent, unique natural graftings like that between a Holm oak and a downy oak, visible in the spectacular town park of jscuvude, allow those who want to spend a day immersed in nature to become acquainted with and visit an unexplored territory.
